“What.” You stared into your little brothers bright brown eyes, knowing fully the fire behind your own was sure to be sending shivers down his spine. “What the hell did you just say to me?” Your growing fury radiating off of you like a furnace.

“Sis, please don’t be mad!” He pleaded, those puppy dog eyes trying their hardest to chip away at your walls. “I’m doing it to help us out!”

“Eddy… do you have any idea what you have signed yourself up for!? No! It’s too dangerous, it’s too risky… It’s too damn stupid! No!” You tapped your foot irritably and shook your head violently.

“Well… it’s too late sis, I-I… I’m already in…” Your little brother awkwardly shifted his weight and rubbed the back of his neck.

Silence set in over the kitchen. Eddy finally met your gaze with fear and anxiety and you returned the stare, your eyes burning into him. You inhaled deeply and the smell of bread caught your attention. You were making dinner before all this nonsense. It was a modest meal: bread, tomatoes, and a small portion of sausage, but it was the best you could do. When Eddy walked in some half hour ago wearing that ridiculous green outfit you were taking the bread out of the oven as precise and careful as possible as to not burn yourself but one look at him and you found yourself dropping the bread pan onto your right hand, burning it in the process. Like any concerned sister would be you asked him about the garment to which he responded under his breath, “I joined a gang called the Rooks.” It only took four words for you to forget about everything, dinner, the searing pain in your right hand, you were dumbfounded. “I joined a gang..”

Ever since your parents died it was just you and your brother, you were the eldest so you took it unto yourself to raise him like your parents would have wanted. When your parents died you were about ten years old, Eddy was just about five, just old enough to remember your mother’s smile but too young to remember anything else. You came from a comfortable upbringing, nothing lavish and yet an improvement from where you both were now. Your father was a lawyer and a good man, he protected the poor and unimportant of London and he never turned down a client and for that he made many friends, and many enemies. Now that it was just you and your brother you tried every day to give him the best you could offer, which meant working multiple jobs. On weekdays you were a nurse, on weeknights you lit street lamps, and on weekends you were a nanny to a lord and lady in Westminster. Eddy hated how much you worked and he would always try to pick up extra shifts at the factory to take a load off of your shoulders but due to your unrelenting stubbornness you assured him you could handle it on your own.

The tension in the air was thick but you continued to stare at him. “Edward Thomas (l/n) so help me God… “ You began, hearing you call out his full name made you feel even more like a mother than before, but he stopped you before you could continue mothering him.

“I know it’s dangerous but, it’s better pay than working in the mill! A-and the leader Mr. Frye, he told me that he would offer me personal training on account of me bein’ so young!” He backed up slightly and put his hands out in front of him protectively.

“Young? You bet your ass you’re young! You’re only 15 Eddy you blasted idiot! Gangs are no place for someone that young!” You ran a hand through your already messy hair and leaned on the kitchen table to give you some stability. “And what did you say about this Mr. Frye? Personal training? This bastard didn’t even think twice about letting you in did he?! He just allowed a child to enter his gang!?” With one large stride you reached forward and grabbed your brothers arm, pulling him into his room and crossing your arms meanicingly. “You are forbidden from leaving this flat until I get home do you understand me?!”

“… You’re not mom… you don’t control my life!” He stood up and raised his voice.

“I may not be mom but I’m the closest thing you have and it’s my job to keep you safe, not let you sign up to get yourself killed.” you stared at him and sighed. “I love you Eddy, I’m doing this for your own good.” You said before turning around and walking out of the flat swiftly, before turning around and calling, “And don’t forget to eat your dinner!”

As you closed the door to the flat behind you, you were immediately greeted with the chill of the London evenings. Shivering as you walked ahead you made a point to get this over with quickly. Your mind raced as you walked towards the end of the street where you could see two green clad gang members standing and shivering. You knew you weren’t his mom, you would never be mom, but despite the lack of a parental relationship you love your little brother more than anything and you would do whatever needed to be done in order to see him happy.

“You there.’ You called out to the two Rooks not ten feet in front of you.

They stopped their conversation and shot sideways glances your way in reply.

“Yeah I’m talking to you, I’d like a word with your leader!” you continued to walk until you were directly in front of them.

They stared down at you like you were a child come to complain about a toy they stepped on but you were not backing down.

“I said I would like to have a word with your leader.” You growled.

Finally one spoke up, “Who do you think you are little lady? If I were you I would step off, you might get yourself hurt.” A green clad man shot at you, nodding his head like a chicken.

“Cut the shit mate I’m not here to mess around, now where might I find Jacob Frye,” You growled once more and crossed your arms partially for intimidation purposes and partially out of the fact that you were freezing.

“Well, if you know where to look he’s not that hard to find,” A deep, joking tone rang out from behind the two Rooks as a man slid out from the shadows.

He wasn’t much taller than you, maybe three or four inches, but the top hat he wore gave off the illusion of being tall. He wore a large leather coat with a green vest underneath. Belts and a pistol hung at his waist and he donned a strange gauntlet on his left arm with an even stranger symbol upon it. You continued to stare at the man for a second more, taking in his appearance and cocky demeanor; you would be lying if you said he wasn’t handsome. Two glowing hazel eyes, alive with warmth and life stared down at you, paired with his strong jaw peppered with scruff. A scar split his right eyebrow and another reached up from his left jaw to his cheek. He had a young face and an even more youthful attitude as he stepped in front of you.

“Pleasure to make your acquaintance my dear, Jacob Frye at your ser-” He began to bow before you cut him off angrily.

“Save it, I’m here to ask you why the hell you would allow a 15 year old to join your gang.” You crossed your arms and tapped your foot at him, giving him the same treatment Eddy just received.

Jacob coughed awkwardly and sent his Rooks away as he soon realized this was not going to be an easy conversation.

“So I’m assuming you’re talking about that new lad… what’s his name again?” Jacob sighed and looked at you cautiously.

Furiously you shot back, “His name is Eddy and he’s just a boy!”

“Oh yes! Eddy! He’s a fine lad.” He chuckled and smiled before turning his attention at you. “What is it to you?”

“That lad is my younger brother and I’m in charge of him.” You stepped forward, now mere inches away from the gang leaders chest. “Now you tell me right now, Mr. Frye, why is my brother in your gang,” you jabbed a finger into his chest and he stared down wearily. Pain shot through your hand as you did, remembering the incident from later you gasped slightly and recoiled your hand.

“Are you alright? I know I have a hard chest but I didn’t expect you to hurt yourself” He chuckled and smugly smirked down at you.

“I’m fine,” you growled as you shivered and hugged yourself.

Jacob sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, “look why don’t we get out of the cold and i’ll tell you everything you need to know.”

You eyed the man suspiciously, you weren’t used to gang leaders being this accommodating. “And what might that entail Mr. Frye?”

“We go and sit down at a pub somewhere and we talk.” He motioned to a pub just across the street.

You stared at him again, scanning his eyes for any clues that there might be any ulterior motives behind his hospitality but you could find none, and you were quite honestly freezing and looking for any attempt to get out of the chill of the London streets. You allowed him to walk you into the pub and the second you did you were ever so grateful. The hearth was glowing with a modest fire sending a soft warm glow through the sleepy pub, one or two men sat at the bar while the bartender cleaned glasses in the back. Jacob brought you to a table in the corner of the room by the piano and leaned back in his seat comfortably.

“I’m waiting.” You tapped your foot under the table and glared at him, leaning back as well to mock his posture.

“Alright! Well the other day me and a few Rooks shut down a factory that was running, shall we say, unethically. Eddy was working there and well, he was sort of out of the job.” Jacob began and it was already too much.

“You made my brother lose his job?” You nodded and stared at him, narrowing your eyebrows.

“It’s not that simple, they weren’t treating their workers right, it had to be stopped and your brother was grateful, something i’d suspect you will never be.” He leaned forward slightly and rested his hands on top of each other. “While we were liberating the factory your boy Eddy socked the foreman straight in the jaw and went to work helping us get kids out of the building, it was impressive to say the least.” He chuckled and shrugged at the memory.

A sigh escaped your lips, Eddy was a good kid but he was prone to violence, not out of hate but simply out of emotion, he once kicked your boss straight in the family jewels for looking at you wrong. It was no surprise to you that when a fight broke out he was there to join in the fun.

You laughed slightly to yourself and you looked down at your feet. “That sure sounds like him…”

Jacob smiled at your laugh and continued on his story, “After all was said and done and we got the factory squared away your boy comes up to me and starts asking me if he could join, starts talking about his overworked sister.” The man locked eyes with you and sighed with a smile. “I too have an elder sister, it’s just me and her and I would do anything to see her happy… I guess I sympathized with the lad.” Jacob smiled, his scar stretching slightly and you sighed in reply.

“Mr. Frye-” You began only to be cut off.

“Just Jacob will do dear, and listen to me, I admire your fire, not many people would even think about walking up to a gang leader and jabbing them in the chest. But I hate to break it to you sweetheart, you do not own your brother and he is old enough to make his own decisions. He wants to join the rooks,”

The pain in your hand started to surface once more and you looked away from the brunette in front of you.

“If it eases your conscious I’ll keep a constant watch over the boy, he’ll be like my protege.” Jacob smiled childishly and you stood up.

Swiftly you were in front of him, grabbing him by his collar and pulling him just inches from you.

“If so much as a scratch is on him I swear to you I will smack that stupid smirk off your pretty face so hard you won’t wake up until Christmas dinner, do you understand me?” You growled.

Jacob looked down at your hand and then back up at you, “I understand… and I think pretty isn’t the right description, perhaps ruggedly handsome?”

You pushed him back in his seat and crossed your arms.

“Of course I swear to it,” Jacob fixed his shirt and stood up to meet you. “Now my lady how about I escort you home, the streets are dangerous this late at night.” He extended his arm toward you and you scoffed at him trying to be a gentleman. “I will accept but only because I’m cold… and you’re surprisingly warm, come on, this way then,” You took his arm and started on the not so long walk back home.
